MANILA, PHILIPPINES – As reported by the Manila Times, two lawmakers belonging to the Philippines’ House of Representatives have expressed their support for a probe on online gambling in Port Irene.
Port Irene is located in the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) in Sta. Ana, Cagayan Province and for the past several years has become a favored licensing jurisdiction for foreign offshore gambling operators.
Recently, lady senator Jamby Madrigal has asked the Senate Ways and Means Committee to conduct a probe on the operations of online gambling in the economic zone. According to Madrigal, gambling operations are happening in the zone without the express approval of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), the Philippine authority on all games of chance.
Representatives Joel Villanueva of the Party List Citizens Action Against Corruption (CAC) and Bienvenido Abante of Manila have expressed their support of Madrigal’s appeal for an investigation of gambling inside Port Irene that is earning millions of pesos.
“Gambling only promotes laziness, greed and excessive love for money which is the root of all evils,” said Villanueva whose father is a well-known religious leader. “I have always been against gambling, be it legal or illegal. I believe it robs the people.”
Villanueva added that he will support any review that will expose the evils of gambling.
Abante believes that the gambling operations in Port Irene would only be possible because known personalities are sponsoring it. He believe the casino operations in Cagayan are illegal.
“I have always been consistent with my stand against gambling whether legal or illegal,” said Abante. “But I guess illegal gambling and smuggling go hand and hand because its gains go to the pockets of only a few.”
Abante was referring to recent allegations that Port Irene has been illegally importing vehicles which it sells second-hand at lower prices and thereby affecting the local automotive industry.
He further added that while economic zones are good for the country, safeguards must be put in place so that even Filipino consumers will also enjoy the benefits and products from these zones. Abante added that laws must be enacted that will send a clear message to everyone that no one or no business is exempt from the law.
