JOHANNESBURG – Online gambling is now legal in South Africa after President Thabo Mbeki finally signed the National Gambling Amendment Bill. But before online operators and players can shout for joy and rush headlong to the fray, they have to sit and wait yet indefinitely.
For reasons that still remain unclear, the implementation date of the recently-approved bill to license and regulate online gambling in the nation remains indefinite until the President officially chooses and announces a date.
The bill to legalize gambling in the former British colony was submitted to Parliament more than a year ago and was thoroughly scrutinized by South Africa’s National Gambling Board that conducted an international study of internet gambling. The bill was approved by Parliament last May 9, 2008 and just awaited the President’s signature.
